Loudness and audio metadata in DPP standards

Technical and metadata standards have been released for file-based delivery of TV programmes in the UK. Drawn up by the Digital Production Partnership (DPP) these include R128 for loudness and optional audio metadata in programme files. The DPP was established in 2011 by the BBC, ITV and Channel 4 (C4) to give information and advice on best practice for digital production and data-based distribution of material. The initiative is supported by other UK broadcasters, inclueding Channel Five, Sky, UKTV, BT Sport and S4C, as well as independent production companies. The new specifications are based on the AMWA (Advanced Media Workflow Association) AS-11 standard for file-based contribution and distribution using MXF (Material eXchange Format) and will be implemented by broadcasters early next month. A key part of these from an audio perspective is that all programmes will have to comply with the EBU R128 loudness standard, marking a move away from setting sound levels to peak only using PPMs. Speaking last year Kevin Burrows (pictured), technical standards chair of the DPP and controller of technical broadcast and distribution at C4, said R128 was "now the norm" with "a fair bit of equipment out there complying with it". Commenting on the new standards in general, Burrows says, "Having an agreed UK standard for file-based delivery across the industry that we can build on is of great benefit in ensuring ease of exchange and the ability to incorporate future requirements." www.digitalproductionpartnership.co.uk
