‘A milestone in sports production’: Lawo’s automated audio mixing debuts at German football league matches

Lawo's KICK software has been trialled on all Bundesliga matches since the start of the season

Professional broadcast manufacturer Lawo is launching an automated audio mixing system for Germany’s Bundesliga football league – the first of its kind in the world.

Deutsche Football League (DFL) subsidiary Sportcast coordinated the activities of the two service providers, Lawo, and broadcast graphics creator ChyronHego, to ready the technology for the market in a two-year development and testing phase.

Live tracking data from the players is used to set the correct input levels for the microphones, to record what is going on in the field, creating a realistic audio experience for the TV viewer at home. Lawo’s KICK software operates as the interface between the tracking data received and digital mixing consoles used.

“The start of the Bundesliga 2017/2018 season marks a milestone in the quality of sport productions,” says Philipp Lawo, CEO of Lawo AG. “We have in DFL and Sportcast reliable partners by our side. They have assisted us in developing the system from the seed idea right through to the final product and given us the opportunity of testing the system under real production conditions. The result of this partnership is a new ground-breaking product that will redefine workflows in sports productions.”

The software has been in use with all Bundesliga matches since the beginning of the current season.
