Exclusive – London post production house Goldcrest is set to re-open two audio suites that were severely damaged in a flood during February this year, writes Kevin Hilton.
The new Studio 2 ADR suite and Studio 3 mix room at the company’s Lexington Street facility have been fully re-equipped, with acoustic treatments by Munro Acoustics, and will be launched officially on 5th October.
The flood was caused by water from blocked drains at the restaurant above the basement studios. Both mixing consoles, an Euphonix System 5 and a Digidesign Pro Control, were destroyed, as was most of the outboard equipment. “The damage was so severe that the rubber supports beneath the concrete floating floor were beyond repair,” commented Goldcrest Post Production’s chief executive, Keith Williams.
Goldcrest opened a re-built big mix room at its Dean Street premises last year and was considering redesigning the ADR facilities at Lexington Street. The flood forced the issue but, says Andy Munro of Munro Acoustics, gave the opportunity to create highly isolated studios that will not be affected by external noise and vibrations.
The studios have floating floors, which give the necessary acoustic isolation and will offer some protection if there is another overflow from above. “The ceiling has been designed to allow water to run off as much as possible,” explains Munro.
After considering several desks Goldcrest selected an AMS Neve DFC Gemini for Studio 2. “It provides us with great flexibility and the power to cover any eventuality that may arise during a session,” comments Williams. Studio 3 is based on an Avid (Digidesign) ICON controller.
Studio 2 features split, isolated crowd areas and movable wall panels to brighten or deaden the sound. Studio 3 (pictured) has a voice booth next door big enough for four actors at the same time. It is also Dolby licensed for trailers and commercials.
Monitoring in Studio 3 is based on Exigy Custom loudspeakers, amplifiers and digital crossovers. “We spent a considerable time discussing possibilities with Matt Dobson at Exigy,” said Williams. “The overall sound can now be electronically switched to any one of four pre-aligned sound treatments, depending on the final delivery of the project, for example broadcast, Dolby film or DVD.” Theatre 2 has a JBL loudspeaker system.
Work on Studio 3’s first mix, for a major TV production, begins next week. Keith Williams is confident that something good has come out of a bad situation: “Munro Acoustics, Exigy and our head of engineering Simon Ray and his team have created two high quality studios, which we believe will enable us to offer not only terrific mixing and recording capability but also probably the quietest rooms in Soho.”
