Two new 'super trucks' have gone into operation for Gearhouse Broadcast in Australia, each equipped with Lawo digital consoles and Riedel intercom. Two more vehicles are now being built and are scheduled to go on the road by the end of this year. All four trucks, which are larger than those used in Europe and have been designed to deal with the climate, terrain and long distances that Australian OB units have to face. They can house up to 30 cameras and are aimed principally at live sports broadcasting but can be used for other events as well. HD5 and HD6 have already been used to cover AFL (Australian Football League) Australian Rules Football, horse racing and V8 Supercars. They will later be joined by HD7 and HD8, which are also being coach built by A Smith of Great Bentley in the UK. Systems integration is being done in Australia. Both HD 5 and HD 6 feature 64-fader Lawo mc² 56 audio mixers, with processing for 888 channels with 144 summing busses. Genelec loudspeaker rigs are used for surround sound monitoring. A 192 port, dual node Riedel Artist system has been installed as the main intercom, comprising 18 external panel ports, 64-channels of MADI I/O, independent engineering and production talkback ports for the CCU bases and voice over IP capability. "The fact that Gearhouse has a major systems integration business building trucks and installations for clients all over the world is a huge bonus for our clients in Australia as all of these super trucks are designed, built and integrated in-house by Gearhouse engineers," comments Manny Papas, Gearhouse Australia's sales and marketing director. "Nothing is outsourced which means the trucks are incredibly cost efficient. These cost efficiencies are then passed onto our customers." www.gearhousebroadcast.com/welcome

HD OBs - trucking on a road near you

They're everywhere - at cricket grounds, football stadia, conference venues, theatres, local arts centres or just generally slogging up and down motorways - and, as Kevin Hilton reports, there looks like no stopping the growing number of high definition outside broadcast trucks. This perception is confirmed by figures in the latest edition of the HD OB Van Directory, which details 42 new vehicles across the Europe, Middle East and Africa region.
