As well as watching the Euro 2012 football on television, German fans can listen to the matches on ARD Radio. In order to cover the tournament, ARD rented two crystal consoles, one mc²56 console, and one Nova29 were rented from Lawo’s rental partner Audio Broadcast Services (ABS). It is the same setup ARD will use to broadcast from the London 2012 Olympic Games. Software was developed by ARD specifically to assist in the management of all control room tasks, which required the station to work closely with ABS to assure optimal system integration. “The Lawo equipment provides the basis for the many in-house developments from the ARD-facilities involved. These complement our portfolio and bring us a long way towards creating a perfect user-oriented workflow. The openly designed interfaces provide the ideal condition for this,” said Manfred Brass (pictured), technical director with ARD Radio at the IBC in Warsaw. Within the ARD, West German Broadcasting (WDR) acts as the host broadcaster for Euro 2012. Feeds from WDR are delivered to the master control room in the International Broadcast Center (IBC) via MADI to the Nova29 matrix, where software tools developed by ARD work closely together with the Nova29, Nova17, Nova73HD as well as the crystal consoles. “Above all, the free and flexible configurability of the crystal consoles, carried out by trained staff, allows for quick adjustments and stands out as one of the most important features of the Lawo system aside from the clarity of the console surface and the overall ease-of-use.”
