Unsigned Heroes 2008: the winners!

test 17 June 2008

UK: Indie-pop act The Headliners has won Unsigned Heroes 2008, writes David Davies. Established by microphone manufacturer AKG in a bid to find the best unsigned band in Great Britain and Ireland in any given year, Unsigned Heroes 2008 ultimately came down to a final selection of eight acts – Bill Davro, ENL, Kovak, Hooligan Night, The Headliners, Tall Stories, Bizali and RoadRunner – with a public ‘Vote Off’ then determining one winner and two runners-up.

Formed in 2006, the Barnsley-based winning act has recently played support slots with The Pigeon Detectives and Little Man Tate. Described as “a smooth-sounding indie band” by jooped.co.uk, The Headliners will perform at an unnamed major summer festival, work with UNKLE collaborator Aidan Lavelle, and pick up microphones and an endorsement deal from AKG as a result of topping the Unsigned Heroes Vote Off.

The two runners-up are four-piece indie-pop band ENL and Tall Stories, whose sound is likened by the band itself to “Lonnie Donegan skipping bail at The Kinks’ house”. Both bands will play at UK summer festivals and receive AKG microphones and endorsement deals.

In addition, all three winning acts will feature on a forthcoming Universal Music/No Carbon Records compilation, entitled The Break’s Lucky Eight and due for release this summer.
