Turbosound: new MD and US distributor

test 2 October 2007

UK: Simon Blackwood, former CEO of Focusrite/Novation, took the reins as managing director of Turbosound yesterday (October 1st), replacing the long-serving Philip Hart. The loudspeaker manufacturer has also announced the appointment of a new US distributor in the form of California-based American Music and Sound, writes David Davies.

Well-known for his roles at Soundcraft/Harman Pro and Focusrite/Novation, Blackwood has been working with the Turbosound sales and team distributor channel for several months in order to obtain an insight into the loudspeaker market. In addition to serving as MD, he will continue to oversee Turbosound’s sales channel management.

Philip Hart, meanwhile, will remain at Turbosound in the role of chairman. He will also serve as a board member of parent company Proel.

Blackwood’s appointment coincides with a change in distribution in the US and Latin America. Having worked with Sennheiser in these markets for some years, Turbosound has enlisted Agoura Hills, California-based American Music and Sound (AM&S) to act as its distributor in the US in a move that also took effect yesterday. Brad Stephens, who oversaw the Turbosound brand at Sennheiser, is shifting across to AM&S to continue his role as national sales manager.

“Sennheiser has managed our brand very successfully, but now it is time to take the next step with American Music and Sound, who are ideally placed to move our business forward,” Blackwood tells PSN-e. “The brand is already very well-recognised there – we just need to make it more available and more prominent.”

Turbosound will publicise the new association at this year’s AES exhibition, beginning in New York on Friday (October 5th), where the company will also showcase the TA-500DP self-powered, three-way, full-range loudspeaker with onboard, user-adjustable DSP, and the NuQ series of networkable self-powered loudspeakers.

While the Latin American market is now under Turbosound’s direct control, Blackwood notes that the company will be “progressively appointing new territory exclusive partners in due course.”
