Tim Carroll quits Avid for Focusrite CEO post

The Focusrite Group has appointed Avid stalwart Tim Carroll to the role of group chief executive officer. Carroll will take over from Dave Froker (who also worked for Avid in the 1990s) when he retires at the end of this year.

In his most recent position, based in Berkeley, California, Carroll was a VP with global responsibility for Audio Products at Avid. Carroll has extensive management and sales experience – he was a key member of the team behind the launch of the S6 control surface – and is familiar with many of Focusrite’s existing customers, products and sales channels. He is a professional musician by background, having attended the New England Conservatory of Music, and having recorded and toured for nearly twenty years as a keyboard player, before joining Avid.

On taking up the role on 3 January 2017, Carroll will relocate to the UK and operate out of Focusrite’s High Wycombe headquarters.

Commenting on the appointment, executive chairman Phil Dudderidge said: “I have known Tim for many years, and my colleagues and I are delighted to welcome him to Focusrite.

Carroll added: “The Focusrite team has a tremendous passion for providing state-of-the-art solutions for musicians and audio engineers, and I share that vision.”

The appointment of Carroll is a big win for Focusrite as the company continues to expand its portfolio of interface devices. After the Anaheim NAMM show in January 2016, Froker and Carroll revealed that their then respective companies (Focusrite and Avid) were already in “in deep discussions” over renewing a collaborative effort, some 15 years after first creating an agreement producing devices such as the Mbox interface and Control 24 surface.

Carroll leaves Avid in a year when the company has had to, once again, cut jobs and close offices in order to make savings.

In other news, Avid announced the appointment of Brian E. Agle as its company’s senior VP andCFO, effective December 12, 2016. Before joining Avid, Mr. Agle served as an operating advisor at private equity firm Francisco Partners.
