International Conference on Spatial Audio (ICSA) 2014, Erlangen

In collaboration with the Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics (IEM) at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, the International Conference on Spatial Audio (ICSA) will return for the third time this September.

Taking place on 18, 19 and 20 September in Graz, Austria, ISCA 2015 will focus on 3D audio in production – something its organiser, the Verband Deutscher Tonmeister (Association of German Sound Engineers; VDT), describes as “both today’s challenge and a vision of a promising future”. The conference was last held in 2014 (in Erlangen, Germany [pictured]; see VDT announces second International Conference on Spatial Audio) and 2011 (in Detmold, Germany).

ICSA covers the technical and theoretical background of 3D audio production and reproduction and gives participants an opportunity to listen to samples and become acquainted with aspects of different approaches to spatial audio. An environment optimised for room acoustics provides the spatial audio experience in both a conventional 5.1 surround setting and expanded ‘immersive’ surround set-ups with more than 25 loudspeakers.

International Conference on Spatial Audio (ICSA) 2014, Erlangen2015’s event (subtitled ‘The 3D Audio Production Chain’) will culminate in an Ambisonic evening concert recorded in an on-site OB truck and transmitted binaurally using terrestrial and in 5.1 via satellite. Bringing together “scientific and professional experts […] to facilitate an understanding of the complex demands of 3D audio productions”, ICSA 2015’s extensive programme features workshops, lectures, panel discussions, an exhibition area and a minimum of three spatial audio demonstration rooms. Manufacturers present will include Fohhn Audio, Barco, Lambda Labs, Synthax and Audio Export.

The conference’s language throughout will be English. Registration opens on 20 July.
