Sound Technology supplies redeveloped uni facility

The University of Leicester has invested £2.5 million in redeveloping Gilbert Murray Hall into a conference venue consisting of a large central space, four seminar and break out rooms and a hospitality area.   AV solutions provider Quadrant Visual Solutions won the contract to design the AV infrastructure, choosing JLB loudspeakers controlled by BSS Audio’s Soundweb London, sourced from UK distributor Sound Technology Ltd.   Two JBL CBT70J line array column speakers and CBT70JE extensions were installed on the side wall of the room, and a pair of white JBL AC28 two-way (2 x 8in LF) loudspeakers were suspended from the ceiling on tension wires using custom brackets. The whole system is powered by a pair of Crown XTi 2002 amplifiers.   Project manager, Les Bell, explained Quadrant’s choice for a sound system: “The three key drivers were simplicity and flexibility, with a user friendly interface. We started looking at where we could get best value and this led us to Sound Technology. We worked out the coverage/dispersion requirements and they modeled it for us. The JBL loudspeakers we specified are extremely versatile and directional.”   Controlling the audio in the conference hall is a 12 input, eight output BSS Soundweb London BLU-101, extended with two BLU-BIB 8-input break-in boxes, which allows the facility to carry out automatic mixing without the need for a third party sound mixer.   John Haywood of York-based Jovial Systems programmed the Soundweb: “The beauty of the Soundweb is its open architecture,” he said. “When the conference centre wants to switch orientation from portrait to landscape, they move the network link across and switch to the second floor box – the BLU-BIB simply reconfigures the parameter presets. All the complex work takes place within Soundweb so that via the master touch control it is simple plug and play.”   University of Leicester’s Andrew Gahagan concluded: “We are delighted with the sound system. We are far more flexible than we were able to be with the old set up and everything has been designed as plug and play, so no technician is needed.”   www.bssaudio.com www.jblpro.com www.jovialsystems.co.uk www.quadrantsolutions.com
