Sound Hire acquired by Plus 4 Audio22 October 2014
Sound Hire, the rental and sales outfit founded by Richard Lienard in 1976, has been acquired by broadcast event specialist Plus 4 Audio Ltd on the occasion of Lienard’s retirement.
In a note posted on the Sound Hire website, Lienard (pictured) reports that he is “very happy that Plus 4 are taking the reins, as the type and quality of work they already undertake fits perfectly with the Sound Hire ethos”. He will be working on an advisory basis with Plus 4 for “the foreseeable future”.
Lienard says: “I would like to thank everyone for their continued support over the years. I have made many wonderful friends and count myself lucky to have worked in such an interesting and friendly industry. When I started Sound Hire I wanted to make it into a career and I have now got to retirement, so I cannot complain!”
Colin Partridge has worked for Sound Hire since 1990 and now joins Plus 4 as chief systems technician for on-site work.
Plus 4 is a regular supplier of DiGiCo and L-Acoustics PA equipment, and Aviom personal monitoring systems, to the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. The outfit also services The Voice in the UK with four DiGiCo desks and 100 channels of radio mics.
Stewart Chaney began his audio career in 1988 and started Plus 4 Audio in 2003. Having worked for Sound Hire in the 1990s he reports that he is “now delighted to be taking over the reins to continue the company into the future”.
Richard Lienard became the first customer for DiGiCo’s D5 Live console in 2002. When he followed this up with the first SD7 purchase in 2008, DiGiCo gave him an soubriquet: ‘Richard the First’.
Over the years, Sound Hire has supplied gear for major events such as the Three Tenors performance in Victoria Park in Bath in 2003. More recent regular gigs have included The X Factor (supplying sound equipment for the final ten weeks of the live shows since 2005) and Britain’s Got Talent (supplying for live studio finals since 2007).
On a further practical note, Lienard says that, while the main point of contact for orders and invoicing will be via Plus 4 at their offices in Chessington, initially equipment collections may be split between Sound Hire in Sutton and the Plus 4 HQ.
