Sell out attendance for first MPG DIY session

The Music Producers Guild (UK) is hosting a series of DIY Record Company Events reflecting the increasing tendency of producers and artists to launch their own record, publishing and/or production companies.

The first session – which took place last week at London’s Metropolis Studios – was moderated by MPG director, producer and independent record company owner Tommy D, and was designed to find out what people what to know about the DIY process.

Panellists Michael Fuller of AIM, Patrick Rackow of BASCA, Ben Jones of the Musicians Union, producer and MPG Chairman Steve Levine, and Ian Brenchley of Metropolis Group each presented their views on the current state of the record industry and highlighted the growing importance of the independent record label in the new digital economy.

Several key points came out of the ensuing debate, including the observation from Fuller that major labels were no longer so willing to invest in developing new acts and were instead seeking those who already had an established fan base. Rackow and Levine stressed the importance of keeping tabs on the various income streams, while Tommy D highlighted the potential of social media to complement the existing promotional methods.

The second MPG DIY event – to be held on 27 January – will examine distribution routes and aggregation methods.
