UK: Soundcraft and Martin Audio equipment saw service at the recent iTunes Festival, reports PSN-e. Oasis, Franz Ferdinand and Bat For Lashes were among the 60-plus acts that appeared at the free event, which this year took place at North London’s The Roundhouse having previously occupied another legendary London venue, KOKO.
Having employed a pair of Soundcraft Vi6s in 2008 to successful effect, iTunes production manager Stuart Turvill specified the consoles again for the 2009 event. A 64-input Vi6 (with AES-EBU cards) was one of two digital surfaces available at FOH, enabling visiting engineers to simply plug in their show files, while the compact surface at the stage was configured 64-in/35-out. The desks were used in conjunction with 144 channels of BSS Audio MSR-604 II splitters.
"The Vi6 is great, particularly for engineers who don’t have their own session file, because it’s an easy desk to walk up to," commented FOH system tech Dave Roden. "I set up a basic template and engineers simply overlay their mix on that."
The iTunes audio set-up also featured a Martin Audio W8LM Mini Line Array System devised by Turvill in collaboration with Martin Audio’s Jim Cousins and Andy Pardoe, and consultant Nick Foots. The specification comprised ten W8LM per side and a W8LMD downfill, flown either side of the stage, with a further six LMs (and an LMD) rigged each side for outfill. Bass hangs consisted of six WMXs per side, hung equidistant behind the inner/outer arrays, and a further WS218Xs under the stage apron.
The stage sound system featured 14 Martin Audio LE1500 floor monitors, three W3s for infill, W2s for the VIP area, W2/W3s for drumfill, and Blackline S18 subs.
The FOH specification was set up using Martin Audio’s predictive software, DISPLAY, while processing was courtesy of XPA DP226s and 448s.
The shows were recorded for future ITV1/2 transmission using a Pro Tools HD rig, 72-input Logic system and Alesis HD24 multi-track recorders.
