RNID to sell student-devised earplugs

UK: A flat-pack earplug system the size of a credit card designed by a UK university student has won an RNID competition. The contest was part of the charity for deaf and hard of hearing people’s ongoing efforts to educate young people about the dangers of prolonged exposure to loud music, writes David Davies.

RNID – which received entries from 100 design students – is now planning to manufacture and sell the Ear-card, designed by De Montfort University student Chi Shing Lo, in a bid to protect the hearing of young people in nightclubs.

“When needed, the earplug can be quickly and easily assembled,” said Shing, pictured here with his winning design. “The judges said that they particularly liked its convenient shape and potential to be used in a large range of environments.”

DMU also won the second and third prizes in the competition, devised by RNID following research that revealed that 90% of young people have experienced the first signs of hearing damage after a night out.

“All of our students responded well to the project, and Shing’s Ear-card demonstrates an acute balance between the practical and aesthetic concerns of the brief,” said Stuart Lawson, senior lecture, product & furniture design at DMU. “The immediacy of the product’s solution is very well thought through with the earplugs always easily to hand.”
