RG Jones serves up the aces at Wimbledon21 July 2009
UK: The RG Jones-installed set-up at the All England Lawn Tennis Club includes equipment from Ampetronic and Martin Audio, reports PSN-e. Home to the annual Wimbledon Championships, the All England Lawn Tennis Club is home to a substantial audio arsenal that includes a Martin Audio AM distributed stadium system on Centre Court and an Ampetronic induction loop system.
“Outside of the two-week Championships – when we are continually on site monitoring the courtside PA, umpires’ microphones, etc – there are requirements from the Club to use parts of the system throughout the year,” commented RG Jones Sound Engineering’s Jon Berry. “The main areas that are used are the Centre Court facilities, which include a range of bars and restaurants. These are used for private functions and it’s in some of these that we’ve installed the loop systems.”
Seven spaces are covered by the loops, and these are situated either next to or on top of each other. The entire Centre Court system is controlled from one of three PA rooms, where the ILD1000G for the loop system can be also be found.
“As the amplifiers are housed remotely from the loops, we’ve had to install them all with feed cables using Star Quad cable because of the length of the run,” said Berry. “In some cases, we have 120m long cable, but it works very well and there is no cross talk at all. Additionally, everything is backed up by a UPS, so if the power fails then it will carry on going with the rest of the PA system.”
Another core component of the PA infrastructure is the custom Martin Audio AM 100V line distributed stadium system on Centre Court. Four additional pairs of Martin Audio WLX subs were stacked in each corner, under the two-way AM10 mid-high roof, for a recent event that marked the inauguration of Centre Court’s much publicised retractable roof. The event was staged by RG Jones and production company 360 Events, and incorporated performances by Katherine Jenkins, Faryl Smith and Blake.
The show was mixed from courtside by RG Jones’ hire department project engineer, Steve Carr, on a 32-channel Yamaha LS9 console. The desk took VT play-ins and sent splits to the BBC OB trucks from a 360 Systems Instant Replay broadcast quality playback machine. Microphones used during the production included Audio-Technica fixtures (for Jenkins and Smith) and a Sennheiser radio mic with an Omni capsule (for presenter Sue Barker).
RG Jones’ Tim Speight observed: “When the requirements of this system were first set out three years ago, it was specified for a speech-only system – we were told that music events would never be staged there. But the sound [during this event] was magnificent right across the dynamic range.”
