Rainbow Post completes HD post century and plans February open evening

test 22 January 2008

UK: London post-production facility Rainbow Post has recently completed its 100th HD post project, a National Geographic documentary entitled ‘Human Ape’. In other news, the company has announced that it is to hold an open evening offering practical advice on HD post work for production managers and producers on February 13th, writes David Davies.

The HD post milestone follows two years after the facility made itself fully HD/SD-capable, with one HD post suite containing a Quantel eQ system and the other an Avid Symphony Nitris (pictured). A more recent hardware upgrade, carried out last summer, involved the installation of a fully HD-capable (1080i, 1080P and 720P) Sony SRW-500 HDCAM SR deck in the machine room. Meanwhile, the audio dubbing suites on the upper floors have been HD-ready (surround sound capable) for several years.

“We’ve been handling post-production of HD projects regularly for a few years, but over the last two years it’s become a major part of our activities,” said Nick Rogers, managing director of Rainbow Post. “The cost of working in HD is falling fast, and although it still costs a little more than working in SD and the deliverables are a bit more expensive, it’s starting to make sense to make programmes entirely in HD and then down-res them to SD at the deliverables stage, which is what we’re doing for a number of the mainstream production companies we work with. That way, your programme masters are stored in the best possible quality and you’re future-proofing your material.”

Looking ahead, Rainbow Post has announced plans for an open evening that will provide a variety of practical advice on HD post-production, with topics set to include format selection, budgetary issues and surround sound. Drinks and food will be provided during the event, which will take place on Wednesday February 13th from 6-8pm.

To reserve a place at the open evening, contact Rainbow Post’s facilities manager, Andy Snowley (tel: 020 7434 4566; email: andy@rainbowpost.com).
