Producers supergroup take talents to academia

A ‘supergroup’ featuring three of the UK’s most successful music producers begins its ‘UK tour’ today.

Lol Creme, Stephen Lipson and Trevor Horn have joined forces with leading drummer Ash Soan to form ‘Producers’. The ‘band’ is taking a series of live performances and interactive production sessions to universities and colleges around the country, ahead of the release of an album, Made in Basing Street.

Producers plan to engage with music students in London (today, 1 March, at the Tech Music School in Chiswick) and then Guildford, Southampton, Birmingham, Leeds and High Wycombe. Multi-media events will see the group spending time with the students in Q&A sessions before taking to the stage to showcase their album, as well as a selection of tracks from 40 years of experience and 200 hit singles and albums between them.

The shows will be produced and promoted in association with the students at each institution; the Producers’ YouTube channel will host news from the tour and footage of the Q&As.

Producers reach Southampton Solent University on Monday 5 March. Prime mover in bringing the group to that institution has been Paul Rutter, programme group leader of Popular Music at Solent, working alongside Sara Silver of Silver Projects. Rutter told PSNE that the event has taken many months to initiate and organise, but now he is “really excited” that it is happening. "Two of our students have won the opportunity to sing some vocals with the supergroup on the night – who are as delighted as we are with the opportunity to gain work experience at that level."

Speaking ahead of the tour, Ash Soan said, “I’m looking forward to the Uni gigs personally because I remember when I was studying music and the likes Of George Martin visited, it really stayed with me. I hope our shows can do the same.”

The pedigree of the band members is unsurpassed. Lol Creme was a member of 10CC and Godley & Creme before becoming a pioneering video director of promos for The Police (Every Breath You Take), Duran Duran (Girls On Film), and Herbie Hancock (Rockit). Trevor Horn produced ABC, Art of Noise, Frankie Goes to Hollywood and Grace Jones as well as being a founder of the Buggles and a brief member of Yes; more recently he has worked with Pet Shop Boys and Charlotte Church. Stephen Lipson was Horn’s right-hand man at Sarm Studios in the ‘80s but has gone on to produce Jamie Cullum, four albums by Annie Lennox and Will Young’s Number One single Leave Right Now.  Ash Soan has played on 27 Top 10 albums and seven Number 1 singles; recent work includes recordings by Adele, Cee Lo Green, James Morrison and Seal.

The album title Made in Basing Street recognises the heritage and location of Sarm Studios, formerly Island Records’ Basing Street Studios, in London’s Notting Hill. The pixellated Producers above are (clockwise from top left) Ash Soan, Lol Creme, Trevor Horn and Stephen Lipson.
