Pro audio joins cellist’s musical pilgrimage

A critically acclaimed New York cellist is embarking on a 600-mile musical journey along the Way of St James – a popular pilgrimage route through France and Spain to the tomb of St James the Great – supported by audio equipment by DPA Microphones, Genelec and Merging Technologies.

For the six-week ‘The Walk to Fisterra’ project, which began on 14 May, Dane Johansen (pictured) is stopping at several of the 36 historic churches along the ancient Roman footpath, where he will perform Bach’s Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello accompanied by a team of filmmakers who are using several pieces of DPA equipment to capture a film documenting the pilgrimage.

Included in the arsenal of sound engineer Kyle Pyke and music producer/co-sound engineer Jesse Lewis are d:dicate 4007A omnidirectional mics for location recording, and a combination of d:dicate 4011F cardioid podium and d:vote 4099 instrument mics for close pickup of the cello.

A variety of DPA d:mension 5100 mobile surround and d:dicate 4017B shotgun microphones are also being used to capture ambience along the trail, with d:screet 4061 miniature mics picking up dialogue.

Pyke says DPA was the team’s “top choice” for microphones, adding: “DPA itself embodies an open, adventurous approach to pushing the industry forward, which is an intrinsic quality of The Walk to Fisterra.”

Genelec, a sponsor of the project, supplied a pair of its 1037C monitors – a three-way active monitoring system including loudspeaker drivers, speaker enclosure, multiple power amplifiers and active, low signal level crossovers – while Horus and Pyramix systems from Merging are being used as Pyke’s main recording interface.

‘The Walk to Fisterra: A Cellist’s Journey’ was funded via Kickstarter and comes to a close on 25 June – day 42 – when Johansen reaches Fisterra itself.
