Orbital Sound to hold theatre sound course

test 3 February 2009

UK: The four-day event will take place at the company’s South London HQ in April, reports David Davies. The course, entitled ‘Sound Training for Drama Students’, will take place from April 14th to 17th, and will cover the full of scope of disciplines involved in the theatre sound world. Orbital has been running courses in this area since spring 2001.

In addition to application training from Yamaha and d&b audiotechnik, there will be specialist sessions on show control, radio microphones, video, communications and networking. There will also be a chance to speak to industry-leading designers, engineers and technical specialists.

Although there are a total of 20 places per class this year, there is a possibility of running two classes simultaneously if sufficient demand exists. The course is priced at _80 plus VAT, and early booking is recommended.

“All the drama schools I’ve spoken to have indicated that they’ll be sending students,” Theo Holloway, Orbital’s training manager, tells PSN-e. “We’ve also had a surprisingly high number of ‘random’ enquiries, even before the dates were released, from smaller drama departments and technical managers looking for training for their junior staff. Word has evidently got out about the course, and I’m glad that it seems to be getting a pretty definitive reputation.”

Looking forward, Orbital is planning a two-day course, ‘Sound Skills for Theatre’, to take place in October. This session, says Holloway, will be “faster-paced and aimed higher than the Easter course. It’s oriented more towards junior working technicians, giving them exposure to current practice and new technology.”
