MPG ramps up activity ahead of Awards night

The Music Producers Guild is set to raise its profile, and that of its fifth annual Awards, with a busy calendar of social opportunities and panel sessions. Nominations for the Awards close in two weeks’ time.

The schedule includes a number of events highlighting the power and gravitas of the MPG Awards, to be held on 7 February 2013 at the Café de Paris; an upgrade to the monthly ‘Speakeasy’ networking meets; and the launch of ‘MPG Q-Time’, a series of discussions with leading representatives of the music industry hosted by 6Music’s Tom Robinson.   The ramping up of MPG activity follows the first MPG Awards Ambassadors Lunch (pictured), held last month at the Hospital Club in Soho, ahead of the big event next year. To an audience of Awards sponsors, MPG members and friends, producer Tony Platt declared, “To have reached our fifth Awards night is fantastic, and I want to thank you all for helping us, as well as asking you to keep spreading the word and build the event.”   The 7 February 2013 date falls between the US Grammy and UK Brit award ceremonies, which, in previous years, have hampered some nominated artists and producers from attending the MPGs because they have been travelling between continents. “The timescale is now such that people can plan their trips to take in the MPG Awards as well,” said Platt.   MPG Awards producer Louise Stevens added: “We’re planning a party in early December to formally announce the shortlists for each category, but we’re also trying to create a series of different events which will give Awards nominees, MPG members, media partners and sponsors the chance to get together. The aim is to create more of a ‘narrative’ to the Awards over the course of the year, focusing on previous winners and nominees so that people can follow their progress and learn more about them.”   Nominations and entries will be open until 5 October 2012. PSNEurope is this year sponsoring the Studio of the Year Award. Any commercial UK studios can enter for free by submitting a small amount of information, a few pictures and testimonials. “We’re happy to encourage nominators to log in, note down their possible nominees and then mull them over, and alter them if they like, right up until the deadline on 5 October,” says Tony Platt.   The MPG has also introduced the A&R Award, designed to recognise the contribution that the best UK A&Rs make to the creative process of production. There are more details at www.mpgawards.com.   Launching in October is MPG Q-Time, a series of panel discussions loosely based on a familiar TV format, designed to stimulate debate and dialogue on all aspects of the ever-fluid music industry.   MPG Q-Time events will by chaired by acclaimed BBC 6Music presenter, recording artist and songwriter Tom Robinson (pictured). The first Q-Time takes place at the Hospital Club on 15 October at 7pm, where panelists will include Martin Mills (chairman of The Beggars Group), Geoff Taylor (British Phonographic Institute CEO), producer and Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill, and producer Hal Ritson (Dizzee Rascal, Example, The Young Punx).
