MPG Awards: 3 days left to vote!

test 25 November 2008

UK: The nomination process for the inaugural MPG Awards closes this Friday (November 28th), writes David Davies. Intended to highlight and reward the creative talent and technical ability of the UK’s music producers, engineers, remixers and programmers, the 2009 Music Producers Guild Awards will feature a grand total of 13 categories, including Producer of the Year, Recording Engineer of the Year, Best Mixer, Best Mastering Engineer and the Joe Meek Award for Innovation in Production.

Anyone can nominate individuals – including themselves! – for particular awards via the MPG website (link below). The final day for nominations is this Friday.

“Nominations can be made by anyone,” confirms Sue Sillitoe, press and PR director, to PSN-e. “You don’t have to be an MPG member; you don’t even have to be a producer. You just have to get online and fill in the form.”

Once collated, the nominations will be assessed by an official judging panel comprising producers, engineers, artists, artist managers, A&R reps, music journalists and radio presenters.

Of particular interest is the Producer of the Year Award, the recipient of which will also receive the BRIT Award for Best Producer, following a recently announced agreement with BRIT Awards organiser The BPI. Both producer awards will be presented at the MPG Awards ceremony, which will take place at the Caf_ de Paris (pictured) in London on February 12th – shortly before The BRIT Awards 2009, scheduled for February 18th at London’s Earls Court Arena.

“It’s very good that everyone is able to work together to support the UK industry and, in particular, the role of the record producer, which I think has always been difficult for people to get a handle on,” MPG chairman Mike Howlett told PSN-e recently. “What we have been trying to do with the MPG is to help people understand what producers do, and when you analyse it they are at the core of the industry. We make the content that is the product of the business.”
