Mike Dowson and Stuart Wilson among the victors at The Conch2 October 2007
UK: The Conch, UK Screen Association’s annual audio awards event, was held in London last week at the Mayfair Hotel. Among those taking away trophies at the sold-out ceremony were Stuart Wilson (in the category of Production Sound Mixer of the Year) and Shepperton Studios’ Mike Dowson (Best UK Re-recording Mixer), reports David Davies.
The Best Music Production award was taken by Casino Royale (Air Studios), while De Lane Lea and Hackenbacker were joint winners in the Best UK Sound Facility category. UK’s Most Promising Newcomer was revealed to be Kelly Marie Angell (Bang Post), and in the Unsung Hero Award it was Gerry Teague – previously chief engineer at De Lane Lea – who emerged victorious.
Other winners included James Boyle from MJM Sound (Best UK Sound Editor/Designer) and Sound 24’s Glenn Freemantle (Best UK Supervising Sound Editor).
“Since the 2006 Conch Awards we have seen much to suggest that there is a greater appreciation of British audio,” Gaynor Davenport, CEO of UK Screen Association, tells PSN-e. “For instance we were delighted that last year’s Conch winners Eddy Joseph and Mike Prestwood Smith went on to win the BAFTA for Best Sound for Casino Royale. With the Conch 2007 we continued to honour incredible talent and showed the rich diversity of work being done in British facilities, thereby showcasing once again that the UK is a great place for producers to work.”
