Metropolis Studios two new hires part of 'Motown' strategy

Metropolis Studios has made two new appointments – Gavin Newman, to the new position of event and content director and former Universal Music Group International (UMGI) chairman and CEO, Max Hole CBE, as the group’s new non-executive chairman.

Newman (pictured with Metropolis CEO Ian Brenchley) will create and oversee Metropolis’ event and content strategy to drive new commercial and content partnerships across recording, production and labels, as well as develop new IP and initiatives.

He most recently served as head of online and music at private members club, The Hospital Club, which launched a successful live music programme supported by both content partners and commercial sponsors. Artists he has worked with include Morcheeba, Nick Mulvey, We Are Scientists, Twin Atlantic, Carl Barat, Band of Skulls, Gaz Coombes, The Charlatans, Ghostpoet, Jane Weaver, The Cult, John Grant, Lisa Hannigan and Jagwar Ma.

Ian Brenchley, CEO of Metropolis Studios comments: “We are all absolutely enraptured to have someone of Gavin’s experience come on board and work across the whole business. Meanwhile, Hole joined the Metropolis board to assist the company on wider strategic issues across music and entertainment alliances.

In a career spanning artist management and record producing, Hole joined Warner Music in 1982 as A&R manager before progressing to MD of WEA Records. In 1990 he became founding managing director of East West Records and made the move to Universal Music in 1998. He is also on the board of the BRIT Trust.

At UMGI, Hole was responsible for the operations of Universal Music’s territories and regions worldwide, excluding the US. Having joined UMGI initially as SVP marketing and A&R, he advanced to EVP in 2004, and in 2010 was appointed COO, assuming the role of chairman and CEO shortly after.

He has been closely involved with the careers of artists from all over the world, including Bon Jovi, Enrique Iglesias, Andrea Bocelli, Lionel Richie, Sting, Queen, Taylor Swift and The Eagles.
