Messe Frankfurt hires Wolfgang Weyand to direct programme of events

Wolfgang Weyand has been appointed head of Messe Frankfurt’s business relations and entertainment department, where he will be responsible for the full complementary programme of Prolight + Sound and Musikmesse events.

In his new role, Weyand will be in charge of all networking and professional development events for trade visitors, as well as the entertainment programme at the Exhibition Centre and in the city. Furthermore, he will liaise with trade associations and lead communications with external cooperation partners.

He will Michael Biwer, group show director of the entertainment media and creative industries business unit.

“We are delighted that Wolfgang Weyand is placing his many years of experience in the cultural and creative sector at the disposal of Messe Frankfurt”, said Biwer. “As CEO of Weyand Entertainment Consulting, Weyand organised the 2016 and 2017 editions of the Musikmesse Festival with a broad spectrum of concerts of all kinds on behalf of Messe Frankfurt. In the preceding years, he organised the Musikbiz Lounge & Congress as partner of Musikmesse.”

“The spirit of Musikmesse and Prolight + Sound has always been a source of inspiration for me – as has the vision of creating a great music momentum in Frankfurt, which was achieved with the Musikmesse Festival,” added Weyand. “I am looking forward to becoming part of this community and working together with exhibitors, trade associations and partners of both fairs.”

Weyand has worked in the event and entertainment business for over 25 years, making his initial steps in the recording industry. He founded his own music-publishing company in 1993 and, until 2006, was CEO of Sound of Frankfurt Veranstaltungs, the organiser of one of Germany’s biggest free music festivals with around 500,000 visitors a year.

In 2015, he was responsible together with Voss+Fischer for the cultural programme of the German pavilion at EXPO in Milan, which Messe Frankfurt organised on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Economics and Energy.

He will take up his new position at Messe Frankfurt in September.

Weyand Entertainment Consulting remains in existence and Weyand will also continue with his voluntary commitments as chairman of the Music Manager and Consultants Interest Group and the Clusters of the Creative Sector in Hesse.
