Memorial tribute and scholarship for JBL legend

test 5 June 2007

US: Following the recent death of former JBL senior director, product development and application, John M. Eargle, plans have been announced for a memorial tribute to take place in Los Angeles on June 14th. Described as a “giant” of the industry by Dr. Sidney Harman, Eargle will also be honoured through a scholarship fund established in his name by the AES Educational Foundation, writes David Davies.

The tribute event – to be held at the Linwood Dunn Theater of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences at the Pickford Center for Motion Picture Study in Hollywood – will begin at 8pm on June 14th, and feature contributions by friends and colleagues of Eargle from across the audio industry. All those who knew and worked with John are welcome to attend.

Meanwhile, the John M. Eargle Memorial Scholarship – created under the auspices of the AES Educational Foundation – is to be given to one deserving student who “combines the attributes of engineering capability and musical interests” in the tradition of its namesake. Established with an initial donation from JBL/Harman, the scholarship is now open for contributions made to the AES Educational Foundation.

A remembrance website has also been established in recent weeks by industry colleagues (see link below).

Joining JBL as a consultant in 1976, Eargle ultimately took a consultancy role at the company with the title senior director, product development and application – a position he held for the rest of his life. The author of a recent JBL biography, Eargle was also an experienced recording engineer and producer, logging studio time on hundreds of albums.
