Berlin engineer opts for full-size Martin Audio PA system on Tim Bendzko tour

Berlin singer-songwriter Tim Bendzko is using Martin Audio’s MLA as the primary PA system on his current tour.

Production company Complete Audio and FOH engineer Stefan Lohr were “delighted” to respond to Bendzko’s specification, with Lohr deciding to use the full-size system over the MLA Compact as he preferred the tonal balance of the larger option.

Complete Audio’s proprietor André Rauhut continued: “Although we sometimes use MLA Compact as the main PA in smaller venues, Stefan likes the tonal balance and character of the full-size MLA — and won’t alter his mix to squeeze it into a smaller box.”

Complete Audio has supported Bendzko’s tours since 2011, providing a scalable system to accommodate venue capacities from 2,500 to 17,000 people.

“It was a tour where you had to bring the appropriate gear to fit every venue size,” confirmed André.

Lohr, assisted by MLA’s head of sound Julian Hoffmann and second line array technician Niko Fuchs, delivered audio Bendzko and his backing band using the MLA system, which included a horn section.

“As usual there was no need for any delay lines, even in the larger venues, thanks to the unmatched throw of MLA,” Rauhut continued.

Typically in the smaller club venues, production rigged between six and nine MLA elements per side, complemented by six or eight MLX subwoofers. This grew to 12 MLA and a single MLD per side in the larger venue set-ups. Side hangs ranged between eight and 12 MLA Compact elements, flown on each side.

Complete Audio invested in new custom dollies for the tour, the first time purpose-made MLA/MLX dollies had been deployed. Each can support up to five cabinets, fully rigged and wired, while the sub dollies can hold up to three MLX (rigged and wired).

“Thanks to the new dollies, we were able to save around one hour per day during setup and breakdown,” Rauhut concluded.
