Major music industry event planned for Bournemouth

test 24 July 2007

UK: Sun, Sea & Sound 2007 is the name of a new official music industry event for Bournemouth and Poole. Set to comprise a diverse schedule of seminars, workshops and live shows, the inaugural edition will take place this December, reports David Davies.

The event – scheduled for Wednesday 5th to Sunday 9th December – is intended to celebrate the music business in Bournemouth, Poole and the south-west of England. A series of high-profile performances at the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC) by acts including Crowded House and Manic Street Preachers will be complemented by a busy calendar of seminars and workshops.

Details of speakers and sessions are expected to emerge during the next few months, but Chris Jenkins – BIC’s entertainment and events manager, and chair of the Bournemouth and Poole Music Industry Forum – tells PSN-e that he is keen to ensure a notable pro-audio presence.

“A number of audio/visual companies have shown an interest in providing workshops for delegates and schools, and it is something the Sun, Sea and Sound team will look to embrace,” he says. “Overall, the event is for people interested in pursuing careers in the music industry, and without professional audio the music business would be fairly quiet and almost redundant, so we know how important it is.”

While the event – which is being developed in association with a number of regional partners, including Bournemouth University – is in its early days, Jenkins says that it will play a major role in Bournemouth’s bicentenary celebrations in 2010 and may also form part of the “cultural olympiad’ surrounding the Olympic Games two years after that.

He concludes: “It is our intention for this to be an annual event and one that is not afraid to change with the industry. It’s very exciting and will hopefully demonstrate that we don’t just sit on the beach all day long building sand castles.”
