Loud and clear: PSN-e previews PL+S (part 1)31 March 2009
GERMANY: Prolight + Sound 2009 – which begins tomorrow – looks set to be a benchmark event for new loudspeaker products, writes David Davies. Blue Sky, Duran Audio, Logic System, Renkus-Heinz and Turbosound (pictured) are among the companies to be showing new or recent products at PL+S, which takes place once again at the Frankfurt Musikmesse.
Expectations are high for this year’s event, which follows a highly successful 2008 instalment that attracted a total of 68,025 visitors – an increase of 13% on the previous edition.
A veritable smorgasbord of new loudspeaker product begins with two new ‘critical listening components’ from Blue Sky: the SAT 8 300W, Compact Mid-Field Monitor and the SUB 212 400-212 400-Watt Push-Pull Active Subwoofer. The SUB 212 is designed to be an integral part of the monitoring system, enabling a studio monitor – such as the SAT 8 – to be positioned for the best imaging and the SUB to be positioned for the best bass response.
"Our customers were asking for a powerful system that was similar to the SAT 12 and SUB 15, but in a smaller package," commented Blue Sky vice-president Chris Fichera. "The SAT 8 and SUB 212 will address those applications."
Duran Audio will exhibit a number of new or recent products, including the "G2" AXYS Scope and Source systems. The full-range units in the series are all three-way and incorporate on-board amplification and DSP. The company will also highlight the AXYS Intellivox Digital Directivity products and the AXYS OpSTImizer, the latter a new service from Duran Audio which calculates the equalisation required to achieve the optimal STI for AXYS products.
Logic System returns to Frankfurt "with an air of optimism", accounted for by a 200% increased in export turnover during 2008. New at the show will be the Nd115 bass enclosure. Designed principally as a bass option for use with the Ethos CA enclosures, the cabinet can be used as the basis of a pole-mounted system or flown above a CA array. Logic System will also show the production-ready version of the Ethos LA long-throw cabinet, which is designed to be flown above the existing Ethos VA system to increase its projection range to the 100m region.
Renkus-Heinz will demonstrate the new IC Live digitally beam steerable live performance system, with matching IC215S dual 15-inch bandpass subwoofers, on the Outdoor Concert Sound Arena throughout PL+S09. There will also be a European debut appearance for the manufacturer’s new VLX3 high output, lightweight large format line array.
TOA Europe is to show the Type H line array series, which is designed to provide clear, intelligible sound reproduction for large, modern public spaces such as airport lounges, hotel lobbies, conference halls and houses of worship.
Last but by no means least, Turbosound will show its TCS series sound contracting products and its Flex Array system (in both flown and ground-stacked configurations) on the stand of its German distributor, Mega Audio GmbH.
The new TCS series (including the TCS-152, pictured) is a complete range of installation products ranging from a large-format double 18" subwoofer and two single 15" arrayable subs, through 12" and 15" active/passive two-way mid-highs, to an ultra-compact 6.5" passive model. Turbosound has also developed a high power three-way switchable bi-amp/tri-amp loudspeaker and, for background sound applications, a high quality ceiling speaker.
