Knights' Flashlight quest finds grail at Troxy

Just over 100 guests and friends attended Formidable Audio’s MkIII Flashlight shoot-out at the Troxy Theatre in east London at the end of November. During the event, sound engineers and associated interested parties were able to compare and contrast the output of a 3-wide x 2-deep (six per side) refurbished Turbosound Flashlight system versus an 8-box hang per side of d&b audiotechnik J-Series line array (supplied by Aaron Ross of Eighth Day Sound).

“It was great to see so many delegates from the pro-audio world as well as the promoters, agents, artists and DJs sharing a genuine passion for sound, interested to hear the differences between the upgraded Flashlight system and a modern line array system,” said Formidable partner Brandon Knights. “[This is] the first time this has ever been attempted in public.”

The evening consisted of three sessions hosted by PSNEurope contributor Phil Ward, with Knights taking the opportunity to introduce Formidable Audio and outline what the nascent company is seeking to achieve, “by bringing this incredible system to artists and audiences who now have a genuine alternative to the line array”. Knights also thanked Aaron Ross for lending his “unbiased” support to the event.

Formidable Audio Launch-Edited-6Joe Turner’s Amber Creative production outfit played a major part in setting up and organising the shoot-out. Turbosound/Funktion-One’s Tony Andrews, Ann Andrews and John Newsham were spotted in the audience.

According to Formidable, feedback from the evening indicated that 77% of guests preferred the sound of Flashlight, with 10% choosing the line array. Thirteen per cent were undecided.
