HK Audio brings modern sounds to Sant Pau Barcelona heritage site10 November 2014
An Elements system by German sound reinforcement company HK Audio is soundtracking events at the Sant Pau world heritage site in Barcelona.
Designed by celebrated Catalan architect Lluis Domenech i Montaner, the Sant Pau Recinte Modernista – or the St Paul Art Nouveau Site – is a complex of buildings erected in 1902 in what is now Barcelona city centre. The fully restored Modernista pavilions, designated a world heritage site by Unesco in 1997, now house a health information centre, the historic archives of the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (Hospital of the Holy Cross and Saint Paul) – a former infirmary dating back to 1401 – and an arts centre hosting events including conferences, training, presentations and corporate parties.
The most in-demand room in the complex, named after Domenech i Montaner, is a 170m² (1830sqft) space, decorated in period style, that may be rented for events involving up to 200 people. On demand, it can be provided with a full contingent of in-house AV equipment, including a screen, projector, microphones and an HK Audio Elements system comprising two E435 mid/high units and a Big Base component on each side.
“Vitelsa, the company responsible for deploying the sound systems in the Sant Pau Recinte Modernista, chose the Elements systems for the Lluis Domenech i Montaner room mainly because of its elegant and unobtrusive design,” explains Marc Rovira from Spanish HK Audio reseller Adagio Pro. “Its audio quality, range and, especially, the fact that the system is so easy to carry completely convinced the Vitelsa team.
“Permanent installation was not an option because the building is landmarked, but with the Elements systems a compelling solution was found for this room – which hardly absorbs any reflections and has an 18-metre ceiling. Incidentally, the Elements system is not the only HK Audio PA in the Sant Pau Recinte Modernista Barcelona. A LUCAS Nano 300 is set up in the MIA Noble room to provide sound reinforcement for a large high-definition screen.”
Adagio Pro provided the Vitelsa installers with advice and assistance with setting up and adjusting the systems.
The Sant Pau arts centre also acquired several HK Audio Linear 5 cabinets. “With this portable HK Audio equipment, which may be configured to suit the given requirements, the Sant Pau people are now well equipped to handle the outdoor events that occasionally take place in the courtyard of this unique building complex,” concludes Rovira.
