Harris divides broadcast ops into Imaging and GatesAir

Harris Broadcast has split its operations into two distinct divisions, one for media software and networking in radio and TV, the other covering transmission.

The creation of Imagine Communications and GatesAir was announced at the first “MediaDay” for the companies, which are part of the Gores Group, held in New York City this week (17 March). Previously both media software/networking and transmission for television and radio had come under the Harris banner but now, comments Charlie Vogt, chief executive of both Imagine and GatesAir, there are two focused companies “innovating across different ends of the technology spectrum”.

Imagine Communications will address a changing broadcast landscape, with broadband, new media devices, online distribution and “non-traditional” programming all part of the mix along with more conventional TV and radio outlets. To target all these areas the company is launching MediaCentral, an integrated platform for automation, play-out and scheduling. Steve Reynolds, chief technology office of Imagine Communications, comments that it will have an underlying structure of “modular, IP-based services that can fully support the integration of media and playout functions”.

Harris has been building up its software and automation business over the last ten years. Despite some crossover with the transmission and distribution side of Harris’ business, it was decided to create GatesAir as a standalone brand. Named after Henry C Gates, who founded the Gates Radio and Supply Company in 1922, the new division will concentrate on studio to transmitter links and transmitters for radio and large-scale, single frequency transmission in TV.

Commenting on the new company, Rich Redmond (pictured), chief product office for GatesAir, says, “We are better positioned than ever in our history to build best-of-breed, over-the-air solutions that take advantage of the latest breakthroughs and changes that will occur over the next decade in content delivery and distribution across the globe. With spectrum reallocation on the horizon in the US and similar dynamic changes around the world, our customers are highly focused on staying ahead of the technology curve, and we are ideally suited to support their new requirements and cutting edge deployments.”

GatesAir is due to launch new products at NAB, including a system for T2 to LTE delivery.
