‘Groundbreaking’ new London venue arrives

test 23 September 2008

UK: Developed by the team responsible for fabric, matter is located in The O2 complex, writes David Davies. The 2,600-capacity site – which had its official launch night on September 19th – incorporates a sound, lighting and video system devised by renowned clubland technical guru Dave Parry and his company Most Technical. Martin Audio, Void Acoustics, Lab.gruppen and Digidesign are among the manufacturers whose equipment has been specified in the venue, which will host both club nights and live music performances.

On two of the venue’s three floors, the sound system is structured around Martin Audio W8L line arrays, utilised in conjunction with the Out Board Timax processor and Lab.gruppen amplifiers. Other notable equipment on either or both of these floors includes a Digidesign console/Pro Tools system to record live performances, and Pioneer mixers in the DJ booths.

The third floor set-up, meanwhile, is based around Void Acoustics Axsys X, Mycro X and Air Motion enclosures, plus complementary subs.

Among many other distinctive features, matter also plays host to the latest evolution of the BodyKinetic dance floor system. The new incarnation incorporates 80 high-powered transducers to ensure a fully immersive sound experience.

“Keith [Reilly] and Cameron [Leslie, owners] really let me have a free hand,” marvels Parry, who admits that another 3-4 weeks of fine-tuning will be required to optimise the system fully. “It was basically a case of ‘here’s the space, here’s the budget – put in what you need.’ And to give them their due, they never once questioned anything I did, even at points where they must have thought I was completely barmy!”

Meanwhile, as one major London club opens its doors for the first time, another is making plans to host its final night. After 13 years, The End – a central London club that in recent months alone has hosted DJs including Laurent Garnier and Groove Armada – is to close for the last time on January 24th.
