Greek Theatre opts for Lab.gruppen

test 8 July 2008

US: Lab.gruppen PLM systems and FP+ Series amplifiers have been installed at a celebrated LA venue, writes David Davies. Situated at the edge of Griffith Park, close to Hollywood, the 5,800-seat open-air amphitheatre was installed with a combination of Lab.gruppen PLM Series Powered Loudspeaker Management systems and FP+ Series amplifiers by the venue’s PA supplier and operator, Schubert Systems.

Specifically, the new Lab.gruppen configuration comprises FP 1000Q four-channel amplifiers powering the main left and right JBL VerTec line arrays, with PLM Powered Loudspeaker Management four-channel models handling subwoofers, centre/terrace/front-fills and delay speakers.

According to the Greek Theatre’s head of sound, Dustin Delker, the hybrid power configuration was selected to ensure complete reliability ahead of the busy summer season. “So far, the Lab.gruppen-powered VerTec system sounds amazing,” noted Delker, pictured here to the right of FOH sound mixer and SSG representative Tim Davis.

Schubert Systems’ founder Dirk Schubert praised the PLM 1000Q’s flexibility and sound quality, drawing attention to their “powerful low-end, silky high-end, and ultra-smooth mid-range. They are capable of delivering full Dolby Lake processing with minimum latency_ There are many power amplifiers with internal loudspeaker processors we will not use because the latency makes them unacceptable. These PLMs are the only way to go!”

Constructed at the tail-end of the 1920s, the Greek is one of LA’s most celebrated live venues and, in recent years, has hosted performances by The Who, Sting, The White Stripes and Paul Simon, among many others.
