George Michael claims Wembley Stadium first13 March 2007
UK: Contrary to earlier reports that prog-rock trio Muse would make the first concert appearance at the long-awaited new Wembley Stadium, it has now emerged that George Michael will be the first artist to play the venue on 9th/10th June. The shows are to form part of the singer’s forthcoming British/European stadium tour, reports PSN-e.
The announcement follows a year in which Michael has enjoyed something of a renaissance in his popularity. Last autumn’s ’25 Live’ European tour saw the Sennheiser endorser play 49 dates in 11 countries to positive notices with Wigwam Acoustics supplying and PA, and Michael is now set to consolidate upon this success with a series of stadium shows at venues including Dusseldorf’s LTU Arena, Amsterdam Arena and Rome’s Stadio Olimpico. The trek begins on 18th May at Aarhus Stadium in Denmark.
“It’s fantastic news that George Michael is to play Wembley Stadium’s opening concert,” said Alex Horne, the venue’s managing director. “He’s no stranger to this great stage having performed at the old stadium both with Wham! at Live Aid and also as a solo artist, so this is a fitting first gig in the new stadium. I’m sure this will be a very hot ticket and we are looking forward to putting the stadium back on the world map as a major music destination_”
Muse will play the much-delayed venue one week later on 16th/17th June. The band’s latterday A-list status was confirmed when the first concert sold out in less than an hour.
With construction firm Multiplex expected to hand over the keys to the new stadium to the Football Association imminently as PSN-e went to press, the new venue is expected to debut with the FA Cup Final on 19th May.
