Genelec 8040A

Nigel Lord 17 August 2010

What is it?A compact, bi-amplified monitor for use in broadcast and TV control rooms and mobile production vehicles. DetailsThe 8040A’s aluminium enclosure houses dual 90W amplifiers (with built-in overload protection) which power a 6.5” bass/mid-range driver and 0.75” metal dome HF unit. Combining Genelec’s Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW) with the rounded edges and curved front/sides of the MDE (Minimum Diffraction Enclosure) enclosure, the 8040A is said to offer a wide, flat frequency response (both on and off axis) extending from 48Hz to 20kHz (+/-2dB).According to Genelec, the 8040A delivers improved imaging and less listening fatigue; the “flow optimised” reflex port offering clear, deep bass articulation with no compression or port noise from the enclosure which measures 350mm x 237mm x 223mm. A steep roll-off, 3kHz crossover filter feeds the dual dedicated amplifiers which together produce a maximum SPL of 115dB @1m. The 8040A includes magnetic shielding, overload protection circuitry and room response controls situated on the rear panel together with balanced/unbalanced XLR connectors and an input sensitivity switch. The enclosure is supplied with Genelec’s Iso-Pod (Isolation Positioner/Decoupler) said to eliminate colouration of the sound by decoupling the monitor from its mounting surface. The Iso-Pod also allows the speaker to be angled so that its acoustic axis points directly at the listener. For optimised mounting in different environments, the 8040A includes integrated rear support points for floor and wall stands, with an additional M10 threaded mounting hole on the enclosure base.
