Future of Sound coming to London next week

test 17 March 2009

UK: The innovative AV event at Goldsmiths, University of London will be hosted by Heaven 17 founder Martyn Ware, reports David Davies. The Future of Sound/Future of Light show on March 24 will feature ambient compositions relayed via a “ground-breaking 3D surround sound system capable of transforming a conventional room into a sports stadium or a concert hall into a cubicle.”

Future of Sound was originally conceived by Illustrious Company, the brainchild of Martyn Ware and Yazoo/Erasure co-founder Vince Clarke.

“Future of Sound/Future of Light is a unique event showcasing the most fascinating developments and performances in the world of artistically-driven sound and light experiences,” Ware tells PSN-e. “No two FOS/FOL events are the same. It will be an evening of surprises and inspiration aimed squarely at engaging a wide-ranging audience.”

Contributors to Future of Sound’s London event will include Tal Rosner, body>data>space and The Sancho Plan (pictured), which is a collective of award-winning artists that uses electronic drum pads to control a cast of interactive animated characters.

Other features of the programme include Scanner’s ‘Light Turned Down’ – billed as “a live interchange between artists charting a conversational movement of colour, musical fragments, texture” – and United Visual Artists’ swinging light/sound pendulum installation ‘Chorus’.

The evening event will be preceded by an afternoon symposium on the phenomenon of synesthesia chaired by Dr. Julian Henriques and featuring a keynote presentation by Andrey Smirnov, who will explore the ways in which Stalinism triggered avant-garde approaches to the arts as an important social tool for revolution.

Both events are free and will take place at Goldmiths, University of London on March 24. The symposium will take place in the Media Resources Building, Screen 1, from 2-6pm. The evening show will follow from 7-10pm at the Great Hall in New Cross.

Free places for the symposium and evening show can be obtained by emailing
