EXCLUSIVE: Law of the Jungle for Genelec with first UK 1238A installation9 March 2015
Jungle Studios has upgraded its cinema suite with the first Genelec 1238A monitor system in the UK, PSNEurope can exclusively reveal. The installation of the tri-amplified Smart Active Monitors (SAM) complements the Soho post house’s 24-fader Fairlight console (see Jungle Group swamped by Fairlight EVO kit).
Jungle, located at 143 and 145 Wardour Street, brought its audio operations under one roof as part of a major refurbishment in 2013 (see Welcome to the Jungle: in conversation with Owen Griffiths), building a new cinema space with a “more efficient and accurate” sound system, capable of producing stereo, 5.1 and 7.1 content. “It was important to get the monitor system right, and from the outset a Genelec SAM system was discussed,” explains Jungle. “The reasons were twofold: SAM systems have the ability to adapt to the room environment, and, secondly, there was the need to ensure a level of consistency across many of Jungle’s smaller suites, which incorporate Genelec 8250 and 8240 systems. As a result, the use of SAM systems in multiple suites guarantees seamless and accurate translation of projects across production rooms.”
The 1238A system was supplied by Source Distribution via Bournemouth-based retailer Absolute Music and calibrated using AutoCal by Source’s Andy Bensley and Dolby. It replaces the Apogee monitors used previously.
“Genelec has a fantastic reputation and some of the best products in the world,” says Patrick James, technical director at Jungle. “The Genelec 1238A offers a complete solution in one box, and, by integrating it into our cinema suite, we continue to offer our clients the best in cinema sound.”
The Genelec 1238A is a three-way SAM monitor designed to adapt to its acoustical environment by tuning the frequency response to compensate for acoustical room influences and to achieve the best possible alignment of volume levels at the listening position. The 1238A features a 15″ bass driver, 5″ midrange driver and 1″ metal dome tweeter, with mid- and high-frequency drivers mounted in the proprietary Directivity Control Waveguide (DCW). Each drive unit has a power amplifier with a rating of 500W for the woofer, 250W for the midrange and 200W for the tweeter. Frequency response runs from 35Hz to 21kHz ±2.5dB.
