Euphonix helps SDTV become ‘Olympics-ready’

CHINA: Shandong Television (SDTV) has purchased a considerable inventory of Euphonix audio mixing systems as it works to modernise its five studios ahead of the Beijing Olympic Games in August 2008. The outlay includes one 40-fader System 5-MC integrated DAW controller and three eight-fader System 5-MC consoles, writes David Davies.

Also purchased were one 40-fader System 5-B on-air digital mixing system (pictured) for an ENG vehicle, and one on-air Max Air digital audio mixing system.

Claimed to be the first provincial station in China to completely modernise its broadcast and post-production equipment, SDTV operates six channels and five studios. The latest equipment outlay will, among other things, enable the broadcaster’s operators to utilise Euphonix’s universal control protocol, EuCon, to manage multiple mixing duties across the DAWs within the studio complex. For example, the System 5-MC mix controllers connect to Nuendo and Pro Tools DAWs via EuCon over high-speed Ethernet for recording and mixing applications.

Considering the new equipment purchase, SDTV’s chief of the audio department, Yu Shaoyuan, commented: “We’ve trusted Euphonix to provide flexible yet stable sound systems for our newsrooms, live event broadcasts and post-production work. With our latest purchase, we’ve taken a leadership position in the industry to ensure our engineers have the best possible equipment to provide the highest quality broadcasts.”

The sale follows a high-profile period for Euphonix, which introduced its new, $150,000 S5 Fusion digital mixing system – aimed principally at the TV broadcast sector and combining DSP and DAW control technology with the EuCon Hybrid protocol – at NAB in Las Vegas earlier this year.

“We’re aiming at broadcasters doing HD TV shows who want a lot of tracks and need a quality product, but can’t afford to spend a lot of money on a big film console,” Euphonix’s vice-president – marketing, Andrew Wild, told PSN-e at the time of the launch. “A lot of TV post people are thinking about how they can do 5.1 seriously now that there is a demand for HD product.”
