DiGiCo SD8: 350+ now sold

test 17 December 2008

UK: The entry-level sister of the SD7 'Stealth Digital Processing' console has garnered a "phenomenal" number of orders, writes David Davies. Debuted at PLASA08, the SD8 went into production in September.

Incorporating a fixed architecture and employing a smaller Super FPGA processing configuration than the SD7 desk, the SD8 is said to benefit from "all the major features and versatility" of the D Series consoles, as well as the advances made in the SD7.

Simultaneously with the release of the latest sales figure, DiGiCo has also announced the appointment of five UK/Ireland dealers to handle SD8 sales: Autograph Sales (London), Hawthorns (Midlands), Stage Electrics (South West), Wigwam (North of England) and Rea Sound (Ireland).

"We are delighted to be chosen as one of the key dealers for the new SD8 console," said Autograph director Duncan Bell. "It continues the close association that we have built with DiGiCo over the last five years. The SD8 brings the intuitive and flexible architecture of DiGiCo products to a whole new range of clients and applications. As a balance of price versus features it's a tough act to beat."

Among the first purchasers of the SD8 was Dundee-based hire Apex Acoustics, which acquired one of the new desks a mere year after adding a D1 to its inventory. "I'm investing in the SD8 for all the same reasons that I invested in the D1," said Apex owner Paul Smith. "As well as producing great consoles, from the moment I started working with DiGiCo I've enjoyed the company's 'family' ethos. They really care of you and that's incredibly important to me."

The new console has also started to rack up live tour commitments, with Art Garfunkel becoming the first artist to take the SD8 out on the road in September.

The focus hasn't been entirely on the SD8, however, with the first 'Stealth Digital Processing' console also registering further sales. Eighth Day Sound (US), Wigwam Hire (UK), LiveAudio event technic GmbH (Germany) and Agorà (Italy) are among the companies to have acquired SD7s in recent months.

"We've had an extremely good year with the D Series and SD7, and the order intake is phenomenal on the SD8," DiGiCo marketing director David Webster told PSN-e recently.

The SD8 will be on show at DiGiCo's stand at ISE 2009, to be held at the Amsterdam RAI from February 3rd to 5th. For the latest exhibition announcements and product previews, click here.
