DiGiCo celebrates SD7/8 success

test 21 October 2008

EUROPE/US: Italian rental company Agor_ has purchased four DiGiCo SD7 consoles in the largest single delivery yet, writes David Davies. DiGiCo has also revealed details of the first tour outing for the SD8 – the follow-up console that made its debut at PLASA08 in September.

Incorporating Stealth Digital Processing and many of the other major features to be found in its forerunner, the SD8 is currently accompanying Art Garfunkel on a European tour.

Meanwhile, sales of the SD7 continue to rack up. Ohio, US-based company Eighth Day Sound recently added three extra SD7s to its touring stock, while the UK’s Capital Sound Hire has already utilised its SD7 on Kylie Minogue’s latest European tour. Staying in the UK, Wigwam Hire now has two SD7s in its inventory, while rental and tour production company Major Tom has also taken on one of the desks.

“Even though the D5 is still the most powerful machine out there and will remain an integral part of our rental stock, the shows we’ve been doing recently have been getting more and more complex, so adding an SD7 was simply a natural progression,” explained Major Tom principal Lars Brogaard.

Elsewhere, LiveAudio event technic GmbH recently purchased two SD7s for an inventory that already includes a number of other DiGiCo desks, while Italian rental company Agor_ has acquired four SD7s – constituting the largest single delivery yet. Already the possessor of six D5s and a D1, Agor_ is planning to acquire a further two SD7s in 2009.

“We decided to invest in the SD7 [as] it out-performs every other console currently on the market,” said Agor_’s Wolfango Di Amici. “Not only does it have an incredible feature set, but it is, quite simply, the best-sounding console we have come across.”

The SD8, meanwhile, is currently making its touring debut with Art Garfunkel. The desk is being used to mix monitors throughout the 12-date European trek, which primarily finds Paul Simon’s former musical partner playing venues with a capacity of approximately 2,000.

Audio rental company for the tour is AudioLease. “Being a one-truck tour, space is at a premium,” said AudioLease’s Steve Sunderland. “With the SD8 we don’t need to carry big racks of outboard gear; it’s very compact and yet it still sounds awesome.”

With the exception of a TC Electronic M5000 Digital Audio Mainframe effects processor for Garfunkel’s lead vocal, monitor engineer Mikey Osman is using only the SD8’s internal effects. According to Osman, they are “really nice and they work really well”.

DiGiCo marketing director David Webster tells PSN-e: “We’ve had an extremely good year with the D Series and SD7, and the order intake is phenomenal on the SD8.”

Look out for a major DiGiCo feature in a forthcoming print issue of Pro Sound News Europe.
