Italian amp manufacturer Powersoft has completed a large-scale audio installation at Borussia Dortmund’s football ground in north-west Germany.

Powersoft’s streamlined Ottocanali installation amplifiers were specified with the advanced X8 [eight-channel] series for the Bundesliga club’s Signal Iduna Park stadium in Dortmund, in a solution that has “more than paid off”, according to system integrator Fulfil Engineering’s technical designer Timo Boerger.

Fulfil Engineering were tasked with replacing the club’s main PA system in 2013, and after receiving a demo of Powersoft’s Ottocanali 12K4 early last year, they knew that Powersoft would tick all the boxes for a high-power and eco-friendly upgrade of the existing EAW sound system at the stadium.

Boerger said that as this demo was currently successfully driving the PA in front of the stadium, it became a “no-brainer” to use the same platform inside the stadium as well.

“We wanted the amplifiers to be monitored and controllable,” Boerger said. “The fact that they also have a GPO to trigger an alarm when something is not fully working was also important.”

The system is monitored and controlled via Armonía software, which automatically receives status messages, fault and error warnings from the amplifiers. Boerger said this meant he knew he was in safe hands: “The Powersoft amplifiers offered everything we needed for this installation.”

The specification also took into account the additional low frequency sound required to accurately convey the pulsing ‘heartbeat’ transmitted through the loudspeaker theme before the start of each match.

The previous two-channel amplifiers have been retired in favour of Powersoft’s eight-channel process-controlled solution, all supplied by Powersoft’s German distributor, Laauser & Vohl.

“Whenever I visited Fulfil, Powersoft amplifiers had always been an important topic of conversation, so they already had a good understanding of the product’s advantages and USPs,” said L&V sales director Friedemann Wüstner.

Marc Kocks, Powersoft’s business development manager for the fixed install market, determined the final specification using Powersoft’s ‘design and comparison’ tool.

Assigned to the various frequency bands of the system – using analogue inputs only – are eight Ottocanali amps and four X8 models.

Kocks said: “The tool enabled us to propose the most efficient solution, allowing us to compare the new Powersoft data with the old system. The outcome immediately convinced the user of the huge saving in mains power and cooling required, when compared with the previous system.”
