All Pros and No Cons for Roger Waters and D.A.S.

test 3 July 2007

COLOMBIA: A recent concert by former Pink Floyd member Roger Waters at Bogot_’s Sim_n Bol_var Park incorporated a 5.1 surround sound system structured around D.A.S. Aero 38A speakers. The characteristically spectacular show – part of a lengthy world tour by one of the key creative forces behind Floyd albums such as The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall – registered an attendance of more than 25,000 people, writes David Davies.

Assisted by an extensive team of producers and technicians, audio for the event was overseen by People Sound under the direction of Samuel Puentes. The main FOH specification consisted of 24 D.A.S. Aero 48 line array systems, with eight Aero 28As as down-fill. The surround system was made up of 16 Aero 38As to handle the surround effect on the left side, with a further 16 for the right. Additionally, eight Aero 28A units were located at each rear side, with eight Compact 2 systems ground-stacked below the stage. The set-up was completed by a relay tower comprising 16 passive loudspeakers.

Stage monitoring was carried out via D.A.S. SML-12A stage monitors. System tuning was accomplished with Smaartlive 5.0, while signal processing was handled by six BSS 255 processors. These also controlled the passive systems, as well as the time control of the 5.1 surround system’s different channels.

Waters – whose solo releases include The Pros and Cons of Hitch-Hiking and Amused to Death – is currently touring with a ten-strong band. Highlights of the concert in Colombia included a group of ten children joining the ensemble to perform Another Brick in the Wall.
