Alcons launches ‘ultra-compact Ribbon’

test 19 August 2008

Following a preview at PL+S 2008, Alcons has begun shipping the LR14/90 line array, writes David Davies. A passive two-way ultra-compact line-array module suitable for use in vertical stacked or flown arrays, the LR14/90 offers a maximum SPL of 130dB+ per unit. The company has also announced the launch of a dedicated UK base, to be overseen by former EAW employee Stephen Badham.

A follow-up product to the LR14/120, the LR14/90 offers 90 x 15-degree projection and is said to be ideal for small- to medium-sized applications. The specification includes Alcons’ proprietary pro-ribbon technology for MHF reproduction, 800W peak power handling and a completely integrated flying system. The new Alcons Ribbon Calculator simulation software calculates positions in 15 steps of 1-degree, offers extensive project information and can be utilised through the ‘auto-splay’ function or manually.

Alcons Audio’s managing director, Tom Back, tells PSN-e: “The LR14 is one of our most successful products (so far) and is a perfect tool for those applications where true High Fidelity response, coupled with high SPL dynamics, is required. Now with the 90-degree version, the LR14 has become even more versatile. Recent LR14 ambassadors include Ho Am art hall in Seoul, Tertutup stadium in Malaysia, and Volkswagen Glaserne Manufaktur, but also [UK TV programmes] Britain’s Got Talent and X-Factor.”

The Holland-based company – currently celebrating its fifth anniversary – has also announced its plans for this year’s PLASA exhibition. In addition to showcasing a current R&D project (‘R-Ray’), Alcons will also present the recently introduced LR7 ‘micro pro-ribbon line array’ and both versions of the aforementioned LR14 system.

Last but not least, Alcons Audio has also announced the creation of a dedicated UK operation, headed up by Stephen Badham. “Alcons has a surprisingly strong profile and customer base in the UK given that there has been no direct representation here until now,” commented Badham. “Now we have that direct representation, plus significant demo stock (which we also use to support our Ribbon Network partners) and a number of significant new products on the horizon, the brand can only go from strength to strength.”
