AES Europe to turn the spotlight on live sound once again

test 15 January 2008

NETHERLANDS: In recognition of its continuing importance to audio professionals, the AES is to focus on live sound once again throughout the education programme at the 124th Convention, scheduled to take place between May 17th and 20th at the Amsterdam RAI. A key component of the ‘Live Sound Spotlight’ will be a three-day series of workshops examining the actual day-to-day work of a live sound professional, writes David Davies.

The goal of the workshops is to provide both beginning and active sound technicians with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of this area. The first day will feature presentations and typical examples drawn from the daily lives of sound professionals, beyond which there will be two days of practice-oriented activities. All of the key areas of live sound – from microphones to digital networking – will be examined during an event that is set to incorporate “much closer hands-on experience” than previous AES live sound seminars.

“Live sound is a very important part of audio with so many live performances each year, and it has been clear to us that the seminars and workshops we have done on live sound at the European conventions over recent years have become more and more popular,” AES executive director Roger Furness tells PSN-e. “This year, rather than repeating the old format, we wanted to go more for an actual ‘day in the life’-type approach where people who hadn’t got experience would be able to see the nuts and bolts of how to put together a live sound performance from the very beginning right up to the event itself.”

The Live Sound Spotlight programme was devised by workshop chairs Eberhard M_ller (Neumann & M_ller), J_rgen Wilhelm (Yamaha), Gregor Zielinsky (Sennheiser) and Ralf Zuleeg (d&b).

The Live Sound Spotlight will also feature additional presentations, workshops, paper sessions and tutorials, the details of which have yet to be released.
