AES 125, METAlliance and more

US: The first METAlliance Educator Summit will take place the day before AES 125 begins, writes David Davies. Scheduled for October 1 at the Conservatory of Music in San Francisco – the same city in which the 125th AES Convention will take place – the Summit will be hosted by the Music Engineering and Technology Alliance with a view to promoting quality in audio production and reproduction. Meanwhile, AES has revealed details of the Special Events programme – presided over by Chandra Lynn (pictured) – for its October gathering.

The METAlliance event will include a session with educators discussing the teaching of high-quality audio, critical listening sessions with METAlliance founders, and presentations by key manufacturers of certain products identified by the Alliance as being worthy of attention.

Educational institutions who have already signalled their intention to attend include New York University, Berklee College of Music and the University of Southern California (USC).

“We’re all looking forward to meeting our educational counterparts from across America and around the world,” commented Richard McIlvery, associate professor and chair of the music industry department of USC’s Thornton School of Music. “This first conference is a much-needed forum for us to have a direct interface with the pro-audio manufacturing community and the METAlliance engineers and producers. I think we are all going to learn something new at this gathering.”

Meanwhile, further details of the Special Events programme at AES 125 have been revealed. Kicking off the day after the METAlliance summit at San Francisco’s Moscone Center, the schedule includes a keynote presentation by Record Plant co-founder Chris Stone about current music industry trends, opportunities and challenges; a look at the recovery and restoration of the first-ever audio recordings, presented by David Giovannoni from First Sounds; and a session entitled ‘The Music Business Is Dead – Long Live the New Music Business!’, presided over by Topspin Media’s Peter Gotcher. Graham Blyth will also perform his traditional AES Convention organ recital, while a lunchtime panel session on the evolution of electronic instrument interfaces will draw on the input of Gino Robair, Don Buchla, Roger Linn, Tom Oberheim and Dave Smith.

“The special events committee worked hard to pull together a stellar lineup of keynotes this year,” said Chandra Lynn. “I’d like to thank them, and especially my vice-chair Larry The O, for their hard work and volunteer effort. The keynote participants are first-class and I have no doubt that they will deliver impactful presentations to the AES attendees.”
