88 keys – and a case of the blues19 May 2009
UK: As Kemble and Co prepares to cease UK piano production, a new book is showing players how to take care of their 88-key treasures, reports PSN-e. Written by John Bishop and Graham Barker, Piano Manual – Purchase, Troubleshooting and Maintenance is billed as "a thorough but highly readable technical guide to the world’s most influential musical instrument".
Available now at an RRP of £19.99, Piano Manual (cover pictured) is aimed at both amateurs and professionals, and provides a wealth of technical information about the operation and optimisation of the piano.
Key topics covered in the new book include ‘how a piano works’, ‘how to buy wisely – both new and used’, ‘how to look after your piano’ and ‘how to tune your own piano’. There is also an explanation of J.S. Bach’s equal temperament tuning system.
The publication emerges shortly after the UK’s last piano factory, Kemble and Co in Milton Keyes, announced that it is to close with the loss of 90 jobs. Kemble’s has been manufacturing in the UK for 98 years, the last 23 years of which have seen it operate under the wing of main shareholder Yamaha. As of November, Yamaha and Kemble pianos will be made at other Yamaha factories outside the UK.
