14th Orbital Sound Fundamentals for Theatre coming in April26 February 2015
Orbital Sound has revealed the dates for its 14th annual Sound Fundamentals for Theatre training course.
The course, arguably the industry’s de facto theatre sound training programme, will this year take place from 7–10 April at Orbital’s purpose-built Brixton, London, training facility. Sound Fundmentals for Theatre has seen over 500 students pass through since its launch in 2008 (see Orbital to relaunch training seminars).
Organised by Orbital Sound’s training coordinator Alex Waddle, led by Richard Carter and supported by technical director Bill Addison, the course combines essential theory with practical skills, catering for a wide cross-section of skill levels. Attendees include freelancers, corporate sector technicians and students from the UK’s leading drama schools.
Students will be given the opportunity to try out a range of audio equipment from brands including Yamaha, Shure, d&b audiotechnik, Flare Audio, Nemesis, Q-Lab and CSC. The four days end with a chance to go backstage on a major West End musical, giving students the opportunity to see first-hand what goes into a professional production.
For 2015, the course content encompasses modules focussing on:
- Theatre fundamentals, key concepts and system elements
- Audio processing, transmission and digital audio basics
- Communication and video workshop
- Sound design and production engineering for musicals
- Radio microphone systems
- Radio microphone fitting
- Safety and rigging fundamentals
- Speaker choice and venue calculations
- Computer systems and controlling the show
- MIDI and show control
- Digital mixing
- Networking and wireless control systems
The Easter Sound Fundamentals for Theatre week forms a core component of Orbital Sound’s educational offering, and is complemented by May’s Mixing Musicals course, which focusses on FOH mixing. Sign up for both courses at the Orbital website.
