136th AES Convention makes grand opening

The 136th Audio Engineering Society (AES) Convention opened with “healthy attendance” on Saturday at the Estrel Hotel and Convention Center in Berlin.

The keynote speech (pictured) was given by Professor Wieslaw Woszczyk, of McGill University’s Schulich School of Music in Montreal, Canada, who presented his perspective on “the value of human interaction, collaboration and continuing education as a way forward in the quickly transforming world”. Dr Woszczyk is an expert on emerging technology trends in audio, and a founding director of CIRMMT (the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Music Media and Technology) and McGill’s Graduate Program in Sound Recording.

Saturday also saw AES executive director Bob Moses announce that next spring’s European AES Convention – the 138th – will take place in Warsaw, Poland, “taking advantage of [its] burgeoning audio industry and growing base of audio engineers, producers and music aficionados”.

The bi-annual AES International Conventions are the largest gatherings of audio professionals in the world, and offer a wide variety of technical programmes, manufacturer exhibitions, workshops and tutorials. The AES was formed in 1948 and has over 14,000 members throughout the Americas, Europe, Japan and the Far East.
